Statement on Supreme Court Taking Up Case That Could Gut or Overturn Roe

Denver – This morning, the Supreme Court announced they are taking up June Medical Services v. Gee, a case that could result in Roe v. Wade being gutted or overturned entirely. The case will be heard this spring and decided next summer. NARAL Pro-Choice Colorado Executive Director Karen Middleton released the following statement in response:

“If Roe is gutted or overturned, it will be Donald Trump and Cory Gardner’s fault. A year ago this week, over the objections and voices of Coloradans, Gardner voted to confirm Trump nominee Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court. He also voted to confirm Neil Gorsuch. Both these Justices have made it clear they oppose abortion rights, something Coloradans strongly support.

Colorado was the first state to allow safe, legal abortion, and we did it in 1967, six years before Roe. We have repeatedly affirmed abortion rights at the ballot box for more than fifty years. And the Supreme Court affirmed the Constitutional right to abortion in its 2016 Whole Women’s Health v. Hellerstedt decision.

We hope that the Supreme Court will uphold precedent and protect, not undermine, the Constitutional right to abortion. And if it does not, we will hold Sen Gardner and Donald Trump accountable.”
