Denver- The co-chairs of the Congressional Pro-Choice Caucus, Diana DeGette (D-CO) and Louise Slaughter (D-NY), have called on the leadership of the House Judiciary Committee to subpoena Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) officials involved in a decision to deny a 17-year-old immigrant rape victim her right to have an abortion.
NARAL Pro-Choice Colorado Executive Director Karen Middleton released the following statement in support of this action.
“Let’s be frank about what is happening here – a woman is being forced to carry a pregnancy to term against her will because of the personal beliefs of a government bureaucrat. A political appointee’s personal anti-choice extremism does not, and must not, trump the Constitutional right to choose an abortion by an undocumented immigrant. This interference by Scott Lloyd and the Trump Administration needs to stop, and it needs to stop now, because the Trump Administration has made it clear it will not end with Jane Poe.
We applaud Rep. DeGette for taking this action to protect the Constitutional rights of this young woman and of others. Taxpayers are paying public servants to follow the law, not to pursue their personal anti-abortion crusade on the public dime and at the expense of immigrant women.”
NARAL Pro-Choice Colorado Foundation’s mission is to support and protect, as a fundamental right and value, a woman’s freedom to make personal decisions regarding reproductive health care.
NARAL Pro-Choice Colorado’s mission is to develop and sustain a statewide constituency that used the political process to guarantee every woman the right to make personal decisions regarding reproductive health care.
